Thomas Wood
Thomas Wood (1951-2022) was an established painter and award-winning printmaker whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Wood’s diverse prints from 40 years of printmaking range from oneiric fantasies to naturalistic views and employ such varied techniques as etching, drypoint, mezzotint, Chine collé and engraving. Wood’s oil paintings often center on the sublime aspects of the Northwest wilderness.
Under the Inspiration Tree: Celebrating the Work of Thomas Wood
The Whatcom Museum – September 28, 2024 - March 2, 2025
This fall, the Whatcom Museum presents the comprehensive exhibition Under the Inspiration Tree: Celebrating the Work of Thomas Wood.
Highlighting key works from the Bellingham artist’s dynamic forty-eight-year practice, the exhibition showcases a wide range of media explorations, including etchings, oils, pastels, and sculptural works. In addition to the more than 300 artworks that will be on display, visitors will have an intimate view of Wood’s etching processes with the recreation of the artists’ studio in the gallery. Assembling artwork from dozens of private collections across the region and working closely with Wood’s widow, Pam Brownell, and his studio assistant, Mandy Turner, this is the most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work to date.

exhibition Thomas Wood - Selected Works will include paintings and prints from throughout the Bellingham artist’s accomplished career. Featured artworks include the landscapes, bouquets, and fantastical scenes that have become the hallmarks of this multi-faceted artist. Prints made from some of the last copper intaglio plates completed during Wood’s lifetime will be displayed in the exhibition.
