Linda Jo Nazarenus - Sanctuary
In Sanctuary, painter Linda Jo Nazarenus shares vivid paintings of vast terrain and the wildlife that inhabits it. Inspired by the American Southwest’s dramatic topography and weather, she creates images that communicate a reverence for Nature with theatrical portraits of birds, foxes and raccoons in enigmatic narratives. The concept of sanctuary is explored through native animals, natural elements and manmade ironies. Influenced by painters of the Northern Renaissance, Nazarenus’ labor-intensive technique entails layering many thin oil glazes on panel to achieve a high level of depth and detail.
In addition to highly detailed oil paintings, Nazarenus presents a new series of evocative landscapes utilizing photography, glass and paint. This alternative process involves transferring the artist’s photographs to the backside of glass or plexiglass, then scratching and removing areas to achieve partial transparency. Nazarenus then reverse-paints areas of the image and adds additional layers to create a visceral effect. These intimate pieces appear both weathered and jewel-like, complementing Nazarenus’ otherworldly scenes.
